World over, countries have invested commendable efforts in the restoration of the natural biodiversity. With the current globalization trends, the industrial era has manifested as a fast growing sector. However, a growth in the industrial sector is correspondingly associated to environmental constraints. Governments have fought in advocacy for the increase in forestry cover with hardly any tangible success. Pursuant to facilitating environmental conservation and Eco-system management CONEM seeks to addresses environmental concerns through reducing carbon emission promoting ecotourism, improving of food security, stimulating aquaculture and addressing soil erosion concerns.

Carbon Emission Reduction

According to the USAID Green House Gas (GHS) emission factsheet 2012, Uganda emits about 49million metric tons of greenhouse gases annually. Of this, 38% is as a result of land use change and forestry emission. Consequently, projections have been stimulated to reduce this emission by 22% come 2030. The question remains as to how feasible this would be given the 2% annual rate of increase in the carbon emission. In fact, Uganda’s greenhouse gas emissions grew 50 percent from 1990 - 2012 with an average annual change of 2 percent. In this line therefore, CONEM’S emphasis on reduction of carbon emission can never be underscored. With initial inference to the eastern region, CONEM seeks to pioneer the carbon emission reduction campaign with local community as key players in this course. In the same line, E-waste management and the anti-plastic pollution campaigns can well be implemented with critical insights starting with grass route implementations at local community level.

Promotion of Eco-Tourism

The Elgon Region in Eastern Uganda has for long been identified for its contribution to the Tourism industry. In alliance with the current tourism regulatory bodies, CONEM lays priority to Eco-tourism with additionally efforts in recovering the countries biodiversity and protection of the local ecosystems within the Elgon region. In this pursuit, emphasis is directed towards the Wetland and forestry improvement. It is through improvement of such systems that communities can counterbalance the industrial effects of spillage and air pollution. Consequently, tourism as a sector can soon attest to the positive returns from the Eco-tourism investment pursuant to increasing the GDP contribution of Tourism past the current 6 billion as estimated in 2017.

Food Security through improved climate and Soils

There is general consensus that Uganda is among the fastest growing economies in Africa; the Agricultural sector has become a safe haven in leading the country towards attainment of the second SDG of ending hunger and any form of malnutrition by 2030. However, the country is still in the ugly abyss of malnutrition with about 36% of the children chronically stunted and undernourished. Given its pivotal position in the country’s export earning with a national employment capacity of over 70%, expansion of the agricultural sector is of commendable relevance. Although Uganda is a key focus of the US Government’s global hunger food security initiative, subsistence firming remains proliferated and disease resistance of the food and Cash crops remains less addressed. CONEM’s approach to Food security is envisaged in its efforts to research and improving post-harvest handling, and providing agribusiness services to the local community
