EDUCATION AND VOCATIONAL SKILLS TRAINING

Pursuant to the achievement of Strategic Development Goals, CONEM seeks to contribute towards the development and improvement of Human potential through advocacy for skill based training for self-reliance. The long-lived advocacy for literacy rate reduction in Uganda and other developing countries has ignited scored high in the establishment of educational strategies for example free education, and scholarship programs. This has however raised a new problem;

“The Unemployment question” Majority of the population are the youth. In the same vain, the unemployment rate among this population is one of the world’s highest with over 70% of the educated youths being unemployed. This thus calls for efforts towards improving the employment rates in sync with the literacy levels of the population. The CONEM approach to improvement of human capital potential is in two folds;

Vocational Skills

First, CONEM seeks to empower the underserved farmers and youth in the Elgon region with sustainable innovative skills in agribusiness. This draws to the fact that majority of the agriculturalists in the Elgon region are less informed on the market trends of their products and lack the ability survive on the external market. Our focus as CONEM is to foster market research both within and on the international market. CONEM further seeks to guide the local farmers on the agricultural productivity in sync with the market demand. This it does through providing advisory and consultative services on species, time, and production levels so as to reduce price instabilities and encourage food protection. Additionally, CONEM encourages constructive partnerships and collaborations with individuals and potential implementers for the mutual good of agribusiness improvement of the young farmers.

Computerization

Secondly CONEM lays focus on skill based training as an economic alternative to young entrepreneurs within Elgon Region. CONEM’s intends to enable out of school youths with practical skills in metal fabrication, carpentry, mechanics, wielding, electronics and Arts & Crafts as a means to improved livelihood. Majority of the Youth in the Elgon region are literate yet lack practical applicability of their knowledge hence succumbing to social immorality. It is therefore imperative that the government and concerned stakeholders restructure the vocational and training centers

for the youths. This can be made possible through establishment of vocational and skill based training centers for the youths most especially in the rural and semi-urban localities within the country.
